Encourage Congress to pass nationwide window film policy

(IWFA)

A call for action to encourage the use of window film products
help promote energy efficiency & job growth by Congress Policy.

BACKGROUND: Today, the United States Congress and President Obama are working to develop and enact federal policies that directly impact our livelihoods. Specifically, our leaders in Washington, DC remain committed in 2010 to drafting, passing and implementing federal legislation that aims to encourage energy efficiency; specifically, policies that could grant incentives for retrofitting energy and environmental performance (i.e., window film products).

Federal legislation now being prepared in Congress hold tremendous hope and opportunity for our industry, and we must act today to ensure our voices are heard loud and clear.

Your help is needed today to educate our elected officials about the value and benefits of a window film tax credit!

Here is where things stand in the U.S. Congress:

· The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives are scheduled to consider comprehensive energy legislation this year – and possibly as early as the end of July. The legislation will likely include provisions related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, along with a number of other policies that aim to create jobs, increase energy efficiency, and promote greater energy security.

· Key Senators are currently hard at work developing policies they hope to include in the energy package that Senate leaders are now assembling.

· In fact, Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus is preparing a number of energy tax provisions, of which could be very important to the window film industry, that he hopes to attach to the final energy bill.

TAKE ACTION NOW - WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

1) Write a letter or send an e-mail to your U.S. Senators with your comments. Please feel free to use our sample text in your letter or e-mail (see attached). Be sure to remind your Senators that you are a concerned constituent, and would like to hear back from them in writing regarding your correspondence. Call (202) 224-3121 or www.senate.gov to find your Senators in Washington, DC.

2) Please forward this message to your family and friends and encourage them to act, too.

Sample Letter for your use:

I am writing to request your support to include a window film tax credit in energy tax legislation that Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) is crafting in Congress. As comprehensive energy legislation is further developed and ultimately considered in Congress, I strongly support the inclusion of language which would amend Section 25C(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code to expand the use of rational retrofit solutions (specifically, highly efficient window film) to improve the energy performance of many existing windows and doors.

As you know, the American economy has been in turmoil for quite some time now. With the unemployment rate hovering around 9.5 percent and a faltering economic recovery looming over our heads today, many individuals and small business owners in my community continue to struggle to make ends meet. I believe it’s now more important than ever for the federal government to create economic opportunities and incentives for our nation, ultimately stimulating the economy and fostering greater confidence amongst consumers and small businesses.

In fact, taking such action at the federal level to enact a new window film tax credit is a rational step forward that should be part of any discussion related to improving our economy. As a small business owner in [city, state], a tax incentive for the window film industry would help to create and sustain thousands of manufacturing and retrofitting jobs in both the commercial and residential building sector. Meanwhile, American consumers – from Florida to Hawaii – would see direct benefit from such action, as they would be well-positioned and encouraged to install window film on existing glass - an affordable, effective energy saving solution.

Taking into account the important role window film serves in terms of benefitting the American workplace and securing a clean energy future, I remain hopeful you will act expeditiously to pass a window film tax credit this year. I cannot overstate how critical it is for our elected leaders to embrace policies that put our country back on a path to stability.

Thank you for your attention to this very important request.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Made In USA, Popular in China.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "Made in USA" seems to resonate well beyond the USA
Consumers in China are now willing to pay a premium for certain products labelled "Made in USA" because they see them as more durable and of higher quality, a new study found.
The report, by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), found 61 percent of Chinese consumers would pay more for a product made in the United States. When products are of similar price or quality, about 47 percent prefer the U.S.-made alternative, more than double the number who would pick the Chinese-made item.
"The Chinese consumer is quietly concerned about what they're getting," said Hal Sirkin, a BCG senior partner and co-author of the BCG study.
Consumers are responding to recent cases of lead paint in toys, tainted milk, short lived manufactured products and other scandals that, in some cases, led to severe penalties for those responsible. As more Chinese enter the middle class, they will increasingly look for value in the goods they buy rather than just the lowest price, which will pressure Chinese manufacturers to improve quality, Sirkin said.
Chinese consumers' preference for U.S. goods, of course, is not as strong as U.S. consumers', and its causes are different: Chinese shoppers more often cite durability and environmental impact than do shoppers in the United States.
But the survey still shows a potential advantage for manufacturers or retailers of consumer products, who may be able to charge higher prices for goods made in the United States.
BCG cited several examples of U.S.-based manufacturing: Dell Inc makes computers; Google Inc makes Motorola-branded phones; and General Electric Co manufactures home appliances in Kentucky.
MaXPro Manufacturing makes their products in North Carolina.
PREMIUM FOR U.S. GOODS
The survey of more than 5,000 consumers helps support the argument that more manufacturers should base production in the United States, according to BCG.
As the cost of producing and shipping goods from China rises, more U.S. manufacturers are expected to expand U.S. capacity, BCG predicts. And as U.S. factories churn out more autos and auto parts, electrical equipment and furniture, they could spark an industrial renaissance with 5 million new jobs, it says.
BCG recommends retailers lock in U.S. suppliers to attract shoppers, and is advising consumer brands to make their U.S. sourcing as visible as possible. For now, relatively few do.
"If you're going to have things that have a long life, like mechanics' hand tools, there's real premiums for 'Made in USA' over a foreign brand because the quality is better," Sirkin said. He named Stanleybrand tools as an example.
In both the United States and China, more than 80 percent of those polled cite quality as a reason to pay more for U.S. goods. Baby food, household appliances, tires, automotive accessories (window film) and furniture are items for which most people are willing to pay a premium, generally of 10 percent or less.
Some categories are outliers: shoppers in China would pay 77 percent more for U.S.-made athletic shoes, a status symbol.
Patriotism motivates U.S. consumers. More than nine in 10 cited domestic jobs as a reason for choosing "Made in USA" goods. Overall, 81 percent of Americans are likely to pay more for goods that carry the "Made in USA" label. More than a quarter of people are willing to pay at least 10 percent more for appliances, furniture, and baby food.
The BCG study, to be published Thursday, focused on consumer goods rather than pricy capital equipment geared toward business and government. It found only minor differences in attitudes based on age, income and whether respondents had children.
The appeal of U.S. goods is by no means universal, however. French consumers see U.S.-made mobile phones, shoes or baby toys as less valuable than local equivalents, and almost two-thirds of Germans would pay more for German products.
________________________________________________________________________
What does this mean for the window film industry? We may notice a new trend in the window film industry chasing away poor quality products that only offer 1-5 year warranties.
This is great news for US Manufacturers like MaXPro who pride themselves on the quality and integrity that stands behind Lifetime Color Stable products. As our motto reads:
"When it's MaXPro on your windows, you know it's American made."

Energy Conservation=Financial Savings

Energy & Financial Savings

The payback period for window film was identified to be less than two years, with up to 70% return on investment (ROI). Of course, construction details, location, and window film used have an effect on the matter and can alter the energy savings and ROI.

MaXPro Window Film’s Benefits

How does window film help? Window film reduces solar heat gain while still letting in light. As a result, it lowers residential and commercial air conditioning and lighting bills. Window film also helps reduce glare and UV exposure.
Combine window film with some white roofs and energy-efficient appliances you’ll have a pretty rockin’ electricity bill!

The Window Film Analysis

The analysis, conducted by ConSol, “compared installing window film on existing structures in the state to other traditional energy saving techniques such as updating HVAC systems, air sealing and caulking, and adding R-38 ceiling insulation, and found that window film came out ahead.”
“With over 70 percent of the buildings and homes in the California market having been constructed before 1980, window film has to be high on the list for every building retrofit project across the state,” said Mike Hodgson, president of ConSol.

The full report can be read on the IWFA site if you’re interested in more details.

Sun Protection for your health and home.

While it’s understood that taking sun safety precautions is important outside, few people realize they can sustain sun damageindoors, too. While both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun can harm the skin and lead to skin cancers, UVB is effectively blocked by glass. However, at least 50 percent of UVA rays can pass through windows. Window film is an increasingly effective solution, offering substantial indoor protection by blocking up to 99.9 percent of UVA radiation. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent and are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year. Window film can help prevent harmful UVA rays from damaging both your skin and your belongings.
“To see the damage that untreated glass can do, take a close look at the furnishings in your home that are hit by direct sunlight,” says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “If the sun has faded the color of your sofa, it can just as easily damage your skin when you sit there.”
Available in varied tints, residential and commercial window films can also cut down glare by more than half while allowing 30-80 percent of visible light to get through, depending on the customer's needs. The benefits of installing window film go beyond protecting one’s skin and household items, as it also can reduce energy costs. In hot weather, window film cuts down heat within the home and in cold weather it reflects interior heat back into the home. Additionally, some new types of "safety" film help hold residential and commercial glass in place if shattered. Several times thicker than the standard sun-protective film, it can greatly reduce the chances of break-ins, property damage, and even personal injury that can result from broken glass.
About 85 percent of melanomas and 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone adopt a complete year-round sun protection regiment that includes seeking shade, covering up with clothing, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and using broad spectrum sunscreen every day.

MaXPro Manufacturing LLC signed papers at BB&T

MaXPro Manufacturing LLC signed papers yesterday at BB&T in Whiteville closing on the purchase of the Committee of 100’s shell building located across from Southeast Regional Industrial Park along Chadbourn Highway. The start-up firm will specialize in manufacturing window films for a variety of applications, including automobile window tint, energy efficient window films for office buildings, industrial uses and other such applications.

MaXPro President Joseph Cobbe, of Wilmington, is a semi-retired CPA who has been a founder of two other window film-manufacturing companies in 1990 and 2000. Both were later sold. “Those companies we started still exist today right where we started them and have expanded,” Cobbe said. “I was involved merely as getting a group of investors together.” Commonwealth Laminate Coating of Martinsville, Va. recently announced yet another expansion, Cobbe said. The Martinsville native moved to Wilmington five years ago to retire. “It’s an interest industry,” said Cobbe, who enjoys building companies and has not yet been lured into full retirement. Cobbe said window films come in an array of colors, thicknesses and have variety of purposes. Safety films applied to windows prevent glass from flying through the air in the event of an incident. “We have films for storefronts to keep bricks from sending glass across the floor,” Cobbe said. It is a measure that many federal buildings and offices began taking after the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing, Lanier said. “They even make some film that can stop a bullet if layered enough,” Lanier said.

The company is expecting to invest about $5 million total in equipment, the building and upgrades, Columbus County Economic Development Director Gary Lanier said. Other films block UV rays and prevent fading of carpets and interiors. Some are used for energy conservation purposes. Cobbe said the company looked in Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender and surrounding areas for a suitable location. The Columbus County shell building was ultimately their pick. “It was the building,” Cobbe said. “It is a shell building so we can start from scratch and it was big enough. It just really suited our needs.” Cobbe said MaXPro hopes to start production no later than March of 2013. The firm will employ about 17 and is excited about its close proximity to Southeastern Community College and training programs offered there. The positions will be good-paying jobs, according to officials, that require at least a high school diploma, but a few years of college in addition, are preferred, Cobbe said. “It requires knowledge of computers,” Cobbe said, adding that the window film industry is not one that will employ hundreds of people but will provide steady, long-term jobs. “You do not have to worry about it being outsourced to Mexico or China for cheap labor,” Cobbe said.

Machines produce as much as 150 feet of product a minute, Cobbe said. Internationally the demand for the film is growing and as society focuses more on energy efficiency and being “green” the demand rises, Cobbe said. Lanier said the close location to the Port of Wilmington, affordability of the property and other benefits were key factors in the company’s decision to locate to Columbus County. “There is a huge market for window films internationally,” Lanier said. “We had a property that fit their needs.” The event marked the end to a 12-year search for buyers of the fourth shell building constructed by the non-profit aiming at boosting economic development in the county. “This is a big deal it’s been a long time coming,” County Manager Bill Clark said. “We are pleased to announce the sell of the shell building,” said Jeff Etheridge, BB&T southeastern regional bank president. BB&T and the former Waccamaw Bank (now owned by First Community Bank) were both lienholders on the property that at one time was valued at roughly $1 million. “We are thrilled by the prospects represented by this acquisition and look forward to an increase in jobs and further vitality for the park,” Etheridge, who also serves as chairman of the Columbus County Committee of 100, said. “We wish this new company much success in their venture.”

Both banks are taking a loss on the sale, officials say. Lanier said N.C. Southeast, a regional economic development engine, played major role along with the N.C. Department of Commerce in bring the company here. Lanier credits Etheridge for “brokering” the deal. “We need the jobs and needed to get the building in use,” Lanier said. Etheridge said Lanier played a key role in attracting the company. Officials say the firm will invest about $5 million in the facility, equipment, upgrades and start-up. A project of the Committee of 100, the shell building, listed at $540,000, has been vacant since its completion 12 years ago and followed other successful building projects like the former shell building that now houses Top Tobacco of Lake Waccamaw.
